Job Description and Duties

As part of an interagency and interdisciplinary team, perform a variety of duties to support tidal habitat restoration and long term land management in the Delta and Suisun Marsh. Specifically, the incumbent will support the Fish Restoration Program implementing land management actions and ensuring environmental compliance for and long-term management of tidal habitat restoration properties. Other duties include but are not limited to: lead and coordinate multiple field staff, collect water quality data via boat, track and maintain environmental permit compliance, and participate in meetings with multi-agency staff. Field duties may require rigorous physical work under variable conditions including on boats.

Special Requirements

A valid California driver's license is required to drive to various field locations and meetings.

Travel may involve driving a personal or State vehicle on or off road. 

Incumbent must be physically able to meet the demands of field and estuarine sampling; must be able to swim at least 50 yards and stay afloat for at least 10 minutes; must be able to lift, pull, or push equipment or objects weighing up to 40 pounds; must be able to function on boats in rough waters without incapacitation due to seasickness; must be able to work in adverse weather conditions; must be able to walk, work, and drive on rough terrain; must have the ability to operate and work from boats of varying sizes; and must be able to represent DWR well in public meetings and while working with the public in the field.

This position is office-centered which means the incumbent works more than fifty percent of their time monthly in the office.

Desirable qualifications include:

  • knowledge and experience in plant ecology, water quality, fish and wildlife biology, invasive species, land management, or environmental studies;
  • knowledge and experience of water quality and biological sampling techniques, equipment, and analysis;
  • field work experience;
  • knowledge of environmental compliance documentation (i.e., California environmental permitting);  
  • project management skills;
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • experience with Microsoft Office Suite, geographic information system (GIS) mapping software, and statistical software (e.g. R);
  • experience with boat operation;
  • experience with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)
  • qualified applicator certificate/license or willingness to obtain one; 
  • and  willingness to learn
